June 2024: Jump Start Award Received for the Establishment of AI Student Elective

MSG is excited to announce that funding has been awarded to support the pilot testing of "Ethical Algorithms for the Modern Clinician" (EAMC), a curriculum developed by Michael Yao and Allison Chae to introduce medical students to the role of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical care.

This MSG funding will support the initial testing phase of the curriculum, specifically providing for food catering during two in-person sessions with small groups of PSOM students. The goal is to gather valuable feedback from these participants and refine the curriculum, with hopes of integrating it into PSOM’s educational offerings in the future.

Congratulations to Michael and Allison on this innovative project, and we look forward to its impact on medical education at PSOM!

August 2024: Q-munity Wellness Clinic Receives the Spring 2024 Big Deal Award

MSG is proud to announce that the Q-munity Wellness Clinic has been awarded a $2,400 grant through the MSG Impact Fund as part of our Spring 2024 Big Deal Award. This funding will support the Q-munity Wellness Clinic in its vital mission to provide psychiatric care to LGBTQ+ individuals in need.

In the past year, 75% of LGBTQ+ individuals in Pennsylvania faced significant mental health challenges, with less than half receiving the necessary care. The Q-munity Wellness Clinic, a medical student-run psychiatric intake clinic, is dedicated to closing this gap. Their work focuses on offering short-term psychiatric services, including evaluations, medication management, and individual therapy. Furthermore, the clinic is committed to connecting patients with long-term psychiatric care within Penn Medicine or through community partners like Philly FIGHT.

The clinic, operating bimonthly at the Hall-Mercer Community Mental Health Center, will have Dr. Ashley Un as the primary attending physician. This initiative will make a meaningful difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals struggling to access essential mental health services.

MSG congratulates the Q-munity Wellness Clinic on their award and commends their unwavering commitment to improving mental health care for the LGBTQ+ community.

September 2024: Academic Resilience Team Receives a Jump Start Award for PSOM’s Inaugural Story Slam

MSG is excited to announce that the Academic Resilience Team has received funding through the MSG Impact Fund to support their upcoming event, "Growing through Failure - A Story Slam about Resilience." Congratulations to Maurizio Porco and the team for their dedication to fostering a culture of wellness and resilience within the PSOM community!

This event will provide a unique platform for students and faculty to share personal stories of overcoming failure, embracing a growth mindset, and seeking support during challenging times. By creating a safe space for vulnerability, this Story Slam aims to destigmatize failure and encourage open conversations about mental health and resilience.

We commend the Academic Resilience Team for their commitment to enhancing student well-being and look forward to seeing the positive impact this event will have on the community. Thank you for your efforts in building a supportive environment for all students!
